One of the greatest mysteries in Christ’s life is that He prayed. He was the Son of God and one with the Father, and yet He felt His need for prayer.

Jesus began His day in prayer. “Rising up a long while before daylight, He went to a solitary place to pray” (Mark 1:35). By this example, He taught that there are some things we can only settle by being alone with God.

Christ prayed before He made decisions. He “continued all night in prayer” before He chose His twelve apostles (Luke 6:12–13). From casual decisions to monumental ones, every choice you make in life is important and can be prefaced by prayer.

Our Lord never made “busyness” an excuse for praying. The busier Jesus was, the more He felt His need for prayer. When the multitudes came together to hear Him preach and to be healed, “He often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed” (Luke 5:16).

The Christian life is a relationship with a Person — Jesus Christ. And we can really know Him as we spend time with him. Therefore, we “ought to always pray” (Luke 18:1).
